His parents returned to Sri Lanka when he was 18 while he finished university at Simon Fraser University studying political science. He has now joined his parents in Sri Lanka where he has interned as a journalist with one of the government-run daily newspapers. Raj's best friend is David Subramanium. Raj has a sister Mala.

Marie is Sophie's best friend since elementary school and studies history at McGill University. Lke Sophie, she is in her final year and studies and is hoping to take a year off to travel. Marie was born and raised in Montreal in the same suburb as Sophie. She is going out with Mike O'Donnell, her first really serious relationship.

David is Raj's best friend in Colombo. Their parents live on the same street and have known each other since montessori. He is of Tamil descent and works as an accountant at a major bank in Sri Lanka. While he never went to university in Canada, he did spend some of his years of high school in California with his parents during the height of the Tamil Tiger insurgency.

Dilani is a childhood friend of Raj and Mala. More recently she has become a good friend of David's as well. She works in an insurance brokerage office as an assistant/secretary.

Mala is Raj's sister. While she was with Raj in Vancouver, she returned to Sri Lanka with their parents during high school. She has recently started university in Colombo.
